Pete's Diner Christmas Surprise

Every Monday since March we have been going to Pete's Diner for breakfast. The reason for this is that I started working a part time schedule, have every Monday off, and join my husband on his morning walk to the Mall. On our way back home, we stop at the diner that is situated right across the street from the Library of Congress. The waitress who generally serves us now knows exactly what we have, and never misses a beat. It's like being in a familiar place and you really don't need to say anything except "the usual."  When we got up to pay at the register today, she went to the back room for a moment. I saw her writing something and put it in to a Christmas bag. She came towards us and wished us a merry Christmas. It was so sweet of her, even if it is a good business move because it was so completely unexpected. When we got home, we opened the package. Inside was the familiar cookie tin with a charming traditional snowman scene. We opened the tin to wonderful butter cookies. She obviously knows my husband well! What I liked most about it all is that we now know her name - Alice. Given the fact that it is a diner, the name was coincidental perhaps? Now the place is even more meaningful and familiar to us. That's another reason we like the neighborhood so much. Although he didn't say it, my husband usually follows up by saying "how could we ever leave this place?" But I know he was thinking it.
