Observations, pictures, and sketches highlight the transition of moving to the nations's Capitol after 30 years of living in the Midwest. A clash in cultures? Maybe not!

The Double Wide Trailer
We moved to DC from Milwaukee in to a tiny 500 square foot condo. We are just now leaving Florida after attending my dad's funeral yesterday. A lot of the sights from child and young adulthood are so familiar to me as we make our way north back home. What really struck me was the mobile home/ double wide trailer that was being hauled down the highway in two parts, taking up two lanes of traffic with a vehicle behind it warning drivers of this very wide load. But this time it had a very different meaning. I would never have thought that our house is actually smaller than these two halves combined! In Milwaukee we had an acre of land and a nice house - and downsized considerably when we moved - taking practically just the clothes we needed because nothing else would fit. And as we learned this week, material things no longer have a lot of meaning anyway. The well wishes of the friends and family closest to us was all that mattered. I don't really care any more about the size of the house - just the people in them.
