Cherry Blossoms, Magnolias, and Flowers in the Neighborhood

A couple of days ago we took the mandatory walk around the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms. It’s an annual ritual since we moved to DC twelve years ago, and several times before that. You could call it a tourist trap, but it’s much prettier than that. And if you like crowds, that is the place to be. We also like to see the beautiful flowers scattered around our Capitol Hill neighborhood. The magnolias, cherry blossoms, and now tulips can be found just about anywhere. By the Capitol and along the National Gallery of Art are several trees. I especially like the tiny flowers growing right on the trunk. Near the playground where our grandson spend a lot of time all those years ago is a magnolia carpet. Already the petals have fallen and the wind is really helping them tumble to the ground. And they are slippery! A youngster fell off his scooter trying to navigate through the mound of flowers. Although it’s felt more like winter than spring this year the flowers managed to bloom and survive at least for a little while. It’s sad to see them all go, but then there is next year.
