Where Are the Lady Ducks?

For the last couple of months whenever we take our morning walk on the National Mall, the ducks are all over the place. And the cute thing about it is that they are usually in pairs. We mostly see mallard ducks around here. The most common places are the reflecting pond in front of the Capitol building, the pond outside and the fountain next to the American Indian Museum, and the US Botanic Garden stream and little water works. All of a sudden yesterday we noticed somethings was very odd. All the female ducks disappeared, and all we saw were the green headed males. They were all in the same places, but they were either solitary or hanging around with their other buddies. And most of them had their heads on their backs fast asleep. We are guessing the ladies are all sitting on their nests out of sight and the boys are up all night having a good time. We are looking forward to seeing the ducklings run around the reflecting pond very soon. It’s an annual event - and there are ramps that were built by the architect of the Capitol to help the babies get in and out. We see more wildlife in the city compared to the country side these days. It’s entertaining to watch and the admission is free.
