Observations, pictures, and sketches highlight the transition of moving to the nations's Capitol after 30 years of living in the Midwest. A clash in cultures? Maybe not!

Parking Restrictions, Cranes, and Air Conditioners
It’s bad enough finding street parking in our neighborhood, but doubly bad whenever the dreaded no parking signs are raised. Last week the temporary signs were posted on half of our block on both sides which is 14 spaces. Luckily it would only be for one day - two at the most. But that meant we wouldn’t be moving our car any time soon since it would be the return of all the Fourth of July vacationers and the start of a work week. The only reason I could figure was it had to be someone in need of a new air conditioner - and I was right. Because the AC units are located on the roofs of these very old townhouses/row houses, the only way to get them off and back on is using a very large crane. So this morning as we were on our way to walk we saw the truck with the air conditioner sitting in it, and on our way home the crane was in place ready to do the work. It’s amazing how much disruption goes on in the neighborhood for something that in other places is no big deal - except for the homeowner. Hopefully all goes as planned so it clears out by this afternoon. We ended up parking our car on the street behind us to avoid any interaction with the trucks and cranes. The sad thing is it will happen again very soon - if not for this reason, something else.
