Subaru Forester Recall, Gas Warning Light, Battery, Wheel Bearings, etc

After putting it off for months, we finally made an appointment to get the Subaru Forester serviced. It needed the routine 6 months check up, but there was also an outstanding spring recall, and we wanted an estimate for a front fender repair. Also, we had an incident in February where we ran out of gas during rush hour on the freeway in Savannah - on the way home from Florida for my mom’s funeral - where there were no warning lights, and it said there were 70 miles left to empty. I’m happy to say we lived to tell the tale, but I reported the incident to Subaru when we got home. We requested a loaner for a variety of reasons and are glad we did. When we got home we got a call that the power was out at the shop because of a power failure in the city. Later in the day we got another call that the power was back on, and that more items needed attention - a new battery, the rear windshield wiper, and ball bearings in the rear wheels. They weren’t able to replicate the lack of a gas warning light and said this was the first incident they heard about in a forester. Apparently it has happened with the outback. We couldn’t get the body work done because they refer cars to a shop in the neighborhood. But we were at least able to get an estimate. We picked up the car this morning and were sad that the car wash wasn’t working because the car really needed it this time. Given the current circumstances, the service rep was exceptional, the dealership was well stocked with hand sanitizer, masks and distancing. They had a tent set up outside to wait and the place was extremely busy. James offered us a free car wash if we are ever back in the neighborhood. The price tag was quite high and the body work is about $800 more. Given that the car is four years old we don’t yet know if we want the work done because it’s cosmetic and the damage isn’t that horrible. I’ve started to look around at new cars but we just aren’t motivated. And since we are hardly driving anymore it seems to make sense to leave things as they are. We won’t be taking any road trips for who knows how long. That’s pretty depressing.
