Belle Haven Park and Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve

Trying to find alternate walking options can be interesting. I do prefer the routine, but routine can become monotonous - especially these days. So I looked up the possibilities along the GW Parkway - many of which we have been before. A few weeks back we walked our old footsteps on the national mall from our old Capitol Hill neighborhood; two weeks ago we went to Roosevelt Island; last week we drove past Old Towne Alexandria to Belle Haven Park. There is a boat ramp there - with a lot of ducks - and a wildlife preserve. It’s been pretty dreary and rainy over the last several days, and it was drizzly when we started the walk and drizzly when we ended it. It makes for better photos, but I prefer sunshine. Rather than circular or curvy paths, the Dyke Marsh Wildlife preserve is pretty much a long straight path forward, until you reach the dead end on the marsh and then take the same path back. The foliage looked the same as our neighborhood park. I did notice a huge spider in a web on the way back and heard a few birds but didn’t see any. Not a lot of people were out walking, which is the way we like it. Driving to these spots during the week is always our best option to avoid the weekend crowds. There are a few more places we might try in the near future. Getting out of the house is the main goal, and taking a ride is an adventure.
