Dumas Brothel in Butte Montana

We are heading back east to DC from the ends of the earth - Astoria, Oregon on the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean with a quick spin to Olympia and then Seattle Washington. We generally stay the course unless something interesting comes by. The way we find that out is by reading Wikipedia when we are close to whatever city we are approaching - unless of course there is no internet connection because of the mountains. Since we would be stopping early in Billings Montana today from Missoula, the choice would either be heading out further to see Little Big Horn, or check out Dumas Brothel in Butte. Well, that was a no brainer! So we got off the interstate and headed up Main Street or something close to it and drove past a few of the copper mines remains. Then we went to Mercury Street to Dumas Brothel. This place has quite the history - at one point there may have been over 1000 ladies of the night hanging around. The term "crib" has a very different definition here. And would you believe that it only closed down in the 1980's?! Montana is an interesting state with big skies and wide open spaces - and brothels. I always think of the old west when we take trips like this, but it probably isn't the best way to get a feel for a place - or maybe it is? After all, it is a part of the history - like it or not. Sorry Custer - you were stood up!
