Late Summer Gardens

We all anxiously await summer and before we know it it’s almost gone. Living in the Midwest for thirty years - where it feels like it’s winter all year round - makes summer in DC seem longer indeed. And living a block from Lake Michigan kept our neighborhood ten degrees cooler - not something you want that time of year. So rather than walk in the air conditioned Union Station this morning to escape the ninety degrees temps lately, we decided to head to the National Mall on this unusual 71 degrees but typical very high humidity day. This is our usual route for most of the year and we pass by a number of beautiful gardens. But there is something very different about them now. Everything is overgrown, overflowing, or well spent. What’s interesting are the huge vegetable gardens in the US Botanic Garden, by the American Indian Museum, and even a patch by the Library of Congress. They are all either plucked clean or growing to very huge sizes. Most of them will soon be removed and replaced by more seasonal foliage. So we will enjoy them while they last. I usually pay attention to and photograph single flowers. But now is the time to appreciate the entire garden. And there are so many of them.
