Self Watering Globes - Glass or Plastic?

We have a console table in the dining room that showcases several houseplants. Since we lost our tiny patio garden when we lived on Capitol Hill, we decided we needed to bring the garden inside when we moved to Virginia. But one also needs to keep up with the watering - when you are at home and when you go away. I read a lot about the self watering globes. It’s been at least a month since I got a set of three large and four smaller glass self watering globes, and five small plastic globes. Depending on the plant itself, the type of pot, and whatever other factors influence the need for water my verdict is in about how well the globes work. The glass bulbs seem to hold water the longest regardless of the size of the bulb and the size of the stem opening. The smaller glass bulbs had a narrower opening and a wider opening and they each worked fine. The hardest part is filling the narrow stem with water and making sure the stem doesn’t get plugged with dirt. If you have patience and are careful handling glass they work well. The small plastic globes needed filling just about every day. I even tried a couple on the little herb pots on the patio and they emptied by the next day - but in all fairness those pots need a half cup of water each day. Because I don’t know how much water each plant really needs this method is nice, and the colors add to the overall pleasing appearance. Obviously they will be useful if we are gone away for any period of time - which was the initial reason for getting them. But I kinda like the way they work so we are using them all the time. We do have one self watering pot that has kept one of our plants going for ten years. It’s nice to have options and the greenery simply adds to the house. It’s just friendlier with plants.
