Observations, pictures, and sketches highlight the transition of moving to the nations's Capitol after 30 years of living in the Midwest. A clash in cultures? Maybe not!

Planting the Spade to Fork Organic Herb Garden
We received an unexpected housewarming/birthday gift in the mail last week. It was a Spade to Fork organic herb garden from some very dear friends of ours who live in Milwaukee. They in fact were the first people to visit us when we moved to DC thirteen years ago. They also know my husband hates gifts - except if they are edible. So we thought we should plant the seeds in the little containers that come with the kit, along with the dirt and some little signs that say what is what. First you need to get some hot water to make the dirt pod come to life, and then mix it, add more water and then stick it in the pot. Add the seeds, cover them with a bit more dirt, put the sign with the date planted, and add some water. We put the five pots on two little white trays and first put them on the windowsill, but then thought being outside in the fresh air would be a better idea. So it’s been a few days and it seems there may be some sign of life. Regardless, since we moved to Virginia we no longer have our little patio garden. So this hits the spot. Thanks so much for your thoughtfulness! We will think of you when we have our first bite of parsley, sage, cilantro, thyme or basil.

Spade to Fork Organic Herbal Garden and Friends
My husband recently had a milestone birthday - a really big one! And with that came the desire to move from Capitol Hill to a more sedate and navigable neighborhood in Virginia. After all, our grandson and his family moved from down the street to Virginia five years ago and I retired from the Library if Congress three years ago. So, it was time. Before moving to Capitol Hill we lived in the Midwest where we had the nicest friends and colleagues. We think about them often and try to visit at least once a year. We even thought about moving back to the Midwest but the weather is simply too dreadful! We received an unexpected package in the mail the other day that reminded us again of our ties to Wisconsin - a lovely organic herbal garden from Spade to Fork. Our friends from Wisconsin know how much my husband enjoys cooking, and this was such an appropriate gift for him. He thinks only edible items are worth giving and receiving. So now he is studying up on how to best proceed. In fact we just brought our outdoor garden indoors since we lost our tiny patio and were thinking about planting some herbs. How timely this is. So every time we look at, and eat, the wonderful herbs we plan to grow we will be reminded of kindness and friendship. Thanks so much for thinking of us! We are so lucky to know you.
