Memorable Christmas Gifts

We were thrilled to get pierogis for Christmas. It was a great gift from our kids. Four dozen different kinds that were delightfully tasty - just in time for Christmas Eve. We weren’t able to visit family this year - again - and we were happy to learn that our daughter in law and grandson were going to stop by our house on their way home from Baltimore back to central Virginia. We would all go for dinner at the old fashion supper club vibe in our neighborhood. We were surprised to get even more surprise gifts and it was fun to open them before all we went to dinner. My husband got a book about J Edgar Hoover, and a tea pot with two different kinds of tea leaves. The poetry written on the side of the tea leaf boxes was rather interesting. Every time we visit the kids we always go to the Waffle House - as a joke - but it’s certainly become a tradition of sorts. We got two Waffle House coffee mugs. We could use some new coffee mugs! I got a lovely colorful box filled with L’Occitane creams, shower gels and soaps. It smells so nice and the creams really work well on dry skin in the winter. We also got a bottle of wine from a winery in Virginia. It was fun to open the presents since we missed the opportunity to do it on Christmas Eve at their house. After that we drove over for dinner and had a wonderful time together. We are also expecting our grandson to visit again this week with his girlfriend who we will be meeting for the first time. Our lives have been quite sheltered over the last few years. We are hoping things can become more normal in 2023. We need to make up for lost time. 

Waffle House in Frederick Maryland

It’s been almost a month since our last visit to the Waffle House. Only that trip was in Lynchburg Virginia the day after Christmas with our grandson. The hash browns are so good! They remind us of George Webb hash browns in the Midwest. The closest Waffle House to us is in Frederick Maryland. We stopped there once a long time ago on our way back to Wisconsin before we moved to DC twelve years ago.  Having been cooped up here in the house over the last couple of weeks was a great reason to take an hour ride for breakfast. Aside from that, we were hoping to check out some reupholster shops and get an estimate for a recliner in need of a makeover. It was a nice ride to our destination and the service and food was great. I got the bowl of hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage and cheese. My husband got a waffle and more hash browns. It’s not the kind of thing we would want to eat every day, but every once in awhile is worth it. Maybe the next time we will have to try the othe Waffle House in town. I wonder when that will be?

Waffle House Breakfast

When we lived in the Midwest we went to George Webb for breakfast more times than I can remember. I loved the hash browns! Then we switched over to Ma Fisher's. It was a habit for us to go just about every Saturday. Here in DC we regularly visit Pete's Diner in our neighborhood after a morning walk and McLean Family Restaurant on Saturday. We know the staff and the staff know us in both places. While we were in Virginia this past weekend, we were treated to a new breakfast place. We went to one of these establishments a long time ago - in Frederick Maryland - on our way back home driving to the Midwest from DC. So when we kept hearing about the Waffle House, we figured it must be good because the family was giving it such good reviews - especially the hash browns. So we drove out to the "old" Waffle House and sat at the counter. The place was packed with some very interesting breakfast eaters! My husband ordered a waffle with hash browns and extra onions, and I got the bowl with hash browns, eggs, cheese, and crumbled sausage. Of course it was good because of all the butter - and the hash browns were even better. The only problem I have eating all this very salty food is that my ankles start to swell. So it is worth the experience while we are traveling, but I need to be very conservative with salt when we get back home. Fortunately for us the closest Waffle House to DC is still in Frederick Maryland. I wish I could eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. So it's a good thing the closest Waffle House is miles away.
