Capitol Hill Dental Group

I finally got around to making an appointment for a routine six month dental check. Based on our experience, it is better to be safer than sorry, so we make every effort to try to make these dates. The nicest thing about going to the dentist here is that the office is located about one block away on First Street - the same path I take to walk to work. In Milwaukee, it was a long ride, a one dentist operation, and took forever to have work done. Three hour sessions were not unusual. Here, right before Bullfeathers, you turn off towards the alley behind the homes and businesses, and take the stairs to the second floor. It's a nice little office with a father-daughter partnership, 4 dentists all together, and it has served us well since we moved. I fell on my face a while ago and thought I broke my front tooth as I landed on the very uneven red brick sidewalk right outside our house. They have state of the art equipment, and the dentists and staff are really great. I had jaw surgery over twenty five years ago so going to the dentist is taxing. They make it nice and easy...even had a crown done in one session. Today I got out with a clean slate. Let's keep it that way.

Wonders Never Cease

It's been about two weeks since the horrible storm leashed it's
ferocious destruction in the neighborhood and community at large
leaving hundreds of thousands without power in the dreadful heat.
Luckily for us our power lines are underground and we had a lot less
damage than most. Just yesterday I was wondering when all the dead
tree limbs would be picked up. I was certain it would be a long time
if past experience has anything to do with it. To my delight and
surprise, the branches were all removed by our house and next to
Bullfeathers. Services in Milwaukee are typically much speedier and we
didn't have to think much about the turnaround. I wonder if I will
ever have that opinion here?

Thursday is usually the busiest day of the work week, and a lot of activities are scheduled on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. As I walked home for lunch this afternoon the streets were filled with all kinds of people traffic- and a lot of them with name tags who were stopping at the Republican Club and also heading towards Bullfeathers, The Thai place, and Tortilla Coast for lunch. Today there were three food trucks parked along First Street. Tasty Kabob- one I routinely see; DC Slices- a new one for pizza; and Mojo- famous for Chivito sandwiches- also a new one. They were all quite busy on my way home. And of course, the people standing in line don't feel it is necessary to move aside so you can pass by. Because the weather is so nice, folks use the benches outside the Truckers Building to sit and relax. It's nice to have lunch options. I wonder when the Burger King Truck arrives? I still prefer the home cooked meal fit for a queen when I get home every day. That's something not a lot of people can enjoy- and it's only two blocks away.

Need Your Shoes Shined?

For the last month or so, the shoe shine guy has set up his "shop" on the grassy part past the sidewalk right in front of Bullfeathers. I don't know if they like him being there or not, or if he even needs a license to do this work. It seems he routinely has a few customers as they wait for their lunch. After awhile, you begin to recognize the same faces as you pass back and forth all the time. One day, he started saying hello, and tipping his hat as I was approached. Then on another day, he suggested that he could do wonders on my boots. He probably could, but I sure can't see myself sitting up there in that little chair for all the world to see. Although he did say I could bring the boots by and he would bring them back the next day. I suppose that is what being a salesman is all about- and also the biggest reason why I would never want to be one. But it does serve a purpose- just not during the winter months.

It's Friday In My Head

It is such a beautiful day today. It's almost 70 degrees and it was very difficult for me to go back to work after I came home for lunch this afternoon. I felt like a caged animal inside the building knowing how nice it was outside. So I decided to use the 30 minutes of credit time I had on the books and left a little early. On the way home it was still sunny, and Bullfeathers sidewalk patio was jammed with staffers and the like. Someone left their radio/CD/ipod player on with the car window down so we could all "enjoy" whatever music they preferred. The nannies were out with the strollers and the skateboarders were doing their thing. The daffodils on the corner are in full bloom, and the African Violets in our garden never looked so healthy and lush. My husband put the bird bath out as the critters are starting to show up again. This was the fourth warmest February on record. I work nine hour days so I get every other Friday off and three day weekends. So, it feels like Friday today. I never had a schedule like this in health care- nor weather like this in March in Wisconsin. Now- if only I could get to three work days a week....

Shoe Shine

There is a very lavish shoe shine stand in the Cannon House Office Building as you pass through the underground tunnel. I'm sure there is even a more lavish one on the Senate side. Since Congress came back to town a couple weeks ago, a young man has set up shop right outside of Bullfeathers. Since he's been there, and every time I pass by, there is typically a customer seated in the chair. I have no idea how this type of "business" works- is it like a lemonade stand where all proceeds are for the taking? We'll see how long he stays there as the weather begins to change. I've never seen anyone using the option at the fancy stand- maybe the price is significantly different. I just can't imagine needing this type of service in this day and age. Wearing a suit and a tie to work just seems so passe.

Cheese & Popsicles & Bullfeathers

The food trucks roam the streets - and they come in all shapes and sizes. There is even a Food Truck event held in an empty parking lot up the street on weekends and for ballgames. Today the Cheese truck and the Popsicle truck were parked side by side in front of Bullfeathers Restaurant over the lunch hour. The lines started as I walked home for lunch, and became shorter when I walked back to work. The funny thing is that the guy eating the popsicle had the Capitol Hill uniform on (blog from yesterday- khaki pants and a long sleeve buttoned down blue shirt). Was that just a coincidence? Wonder how many people drooled popsicle juice on themselves. It is very hot here this week, and nothing is more satisfying than a good 'ole popsicle. I'm not sure how the cheese part fits in.

CLYDESDALE ON CAPITOL HILL? BULLFEATHERS!

I was walking home for lunch today and happened upon an unusual sight - a horse in front of a restaurant that is frequented by a lot of folks who work on Capitol Hill. The restaurant just went through a major renovation. And it is called Bullfeathers, after Teddy Roosevelt, who used the term routinely. Maybe this is a way to celebrate the re-opening and get some attention. I asked three people why the horse was there- no one seemed to know. But everyone was taking turns having their picture taken with him. There was a sign posted in front that said Clyde would be there from 1-2 PM, and that a Busch product, in a bottle, would be available for $3.00 for lunch. The closest I got to a horse back home was at the state fair.
