US Botanical Garden Visit

One of my favorite places is the US Botanical garden. When we lived on Capitol Hill for thirteen years it was almost a daily visit on our morning walks. The gardens are simply beautiful and the summer vegetable crops are quite interesting. Yesterday we took our first metro ride from our new neighborhood in northern Virginia to see how long it would take to get to the Capitol south metro stop, and then visit an exhibit at the Sackler gallery. A walk through the Botanical garden was a necessity since we hadn’t seen it for a few months. With an overcast sky and late summer everything was quite overgrown. It’s amazing how things look so different now that we live somewhere else. One seems to notice things more since we no longer take it all for granted. Or, because we no longer see it every day, the changes are just more noticeable. The gardeners were already digging up the produce. The pumpkins were hiding under the leaves. The beans and peppers were sprouting everywhere. And the pomegranates were on their way to maturing. The lily pad pond was lost in the overgrowth and the sunflowers at the exit were all taller than us. It doesn’t matter what season it is. It’s always worth the visit.
