52Frames Detail Photo Trending

I belong to a weekly photo challenge called 52Frames. There are generally 2500 to 3000 entries. Although it is not a “contest,” there are ways for your photo to stand out from the rest. Obviously being selected as one of the top three is the best - and I don’t think that will ever happen since my camera is my phone and I am not a photographer - I just love to take photos. And I also love to create composite images using procreate. Another way is to have your photo highlighted on instagram. I know it’s happened at least two times - but I think maybe three - before I realized it was happening! Another way to be recognized is to have your photo selected in the top 52. I’ve been fortunate enough that it has happened five times in two and a half years. Then one week a fellow framer told me that my photo was “trending” on the 52Frames website. During the week there are three photos that are updated at certain intervals. I don’t know what the criteria is. But since she told me I have been looking at the website daily to see how it works, and also informing fellow framers when their photos are trending. And since she told me about this trending my photo(s) has been highlighted every week since! Perhaps they have been highlighted before that but I rarely looked at the website during the week. So this week my image was in the top three again for about a day. I contacted 52Frames to see what the criteria was, but nothing specific was given. All I care is that it is such fun to see when my photos are part of the rotation. I’d like to make it a habit! 

52Frames Details Weekly Photo Challenge

The subject for the 52Frames photo challenge this week was “details.” And the textile exhibit at the National Gallery of Art had a piece that caught my eye the week before. So we went back to take more photos of it. I liked the color and the overall appearance. It reminded me of the old macrame rope stuff I used to do. I wanted to create a composite - even though the solid black backdrop really made the details pop. I had an old photo of a wall in front of the Natural History Museum that had complimentary colors in it. That would become the backdrop for the textile - because the wall itself was detailed as well. But in order to give the garment a bit of depth a duplicate was created which suggested a slight shadow. I also tried several other duplicates against solid backgrounds. I can never decide which photo looks the best so I always follow my husband’s recommendation - even though I don’t always agree. I really enjoy creating composite images like this because it’s so much more than just taking a photo and editing it. This becomes a project and it’s a lot more fun. And I really appreciate all of the kind words I get from people all over the world. 

52Frames Details Photo Challenge

This weeks’s subject for the 52Frames photo challenge was “details.” It started with a tiny leaf in the neighborhood park that I didn’t think much of until I edited the photo. It ended up being the selection for the week. The perfect symmetry of the gold to garnet spectrum or “color wheel” was very unusual in an autumn leaf. Usually the colors are haphazard and random. There were several other leaves to pick from but this one was unusual looking! Looking upwards towards the sky the dazzling fall colors looked ever so interesting too. One image of the tree trunks and branches had both green and yellow leaves in what looked like a split screen. We went to a plant store to find some violas and pansies for the balcony flower baskets and came across several detailed pumpkins and gourds - perfect for the season, but still not as interesting. Later on in the week we drove in to DC and parked in our old Capitol Hill neighborhood. The Hirshhorn museum building looked very detailed with the fountain drained and the round structure colliding. Then we went to the Sackler museum to visit the Persian treasures. Obviously a lot of those cherieshed items are quite intricate, but I didn’t think would work well for this challenge. There is something about nature vs man made that usually wins out. It was a beautiful week for taking photos and hopefully the image we selected gets some attention! 

52Frames_details

Lest week we drove down to the SE DC waterfront, most recently known as Yards Park. When we first moved to Capitol Hill fifteen years ago, none of this existed. Today it is a construction zone that never stops with high rises and glass everywhere. One of the first things to be built was the Nationals Stadium. Neither one of us is impressed by the area because it definitely lacks the old charm of our old neighborhood. It is supposed to be one of the most densely populated areas in DC when all is said and done. Before we moved to northern Virginia almost two years ago we considered renting an apartment there before we decided to buy, but luckily we didn’t. So aside from our morning walk I was also in search of images for the 52Frames photo challenge - “details.” I had taken a few photos in the park by our house just in case nothing else came around, but I always try to get something in town. I didn’t have anything particular in mind, so we just wandered around in our old footsteps - first through the underpass with the graffiti rocks, towards the Anacostia River park, then along the foot path and the blue and green DC water department building Then we reached the stadium and the bronze statues in front of the entrance caught my eye. I liked the close up of the shoe, that happens to be Frank Howard “Hondo” - who not only wore glasses, but had 49 home runs for three straight seasons with the Senators 1968-70. Then there was the reflection of the condo building in the baseball that was hanging high above; and another condo building with interesting balconies. I have a difficult time deciding which image should be submitted so lately I have been posting them on my Facebook business page and Instagram to see which one gets the most hits. This week it looks like the baseball shoe is the clear winner, but the condo building with the interesting balconies and the baseball with the reflection were close behind. This week the challenge is “negative space.” I’m sure something will fit the bill by the end of the week.
