Observations, pictures, and sketches highlight the transition of moving to the nations's Capitol after 30 years of living in the Midwest. A clash in cultures? Maybe not!

Spoon Photo Trending on 52Frames
It’s been a while since one of my photos has been selected as a top 52 on 52Frames. And it’s also been a while since any of my photos were picked on the instagram site. I know my photos will never be in the top three out of 2500-3000 submitted weekly. But since April when a fellow framer told me that my photo was trending on the 52Frames website, I have been checking the website at least every day to see if the same would happen. And it has. My photo has trended usually on the second day after the album opens. And this week was no exception. I don’t know what the criteria is but am always happy to see that it gets that far. Maybe because the effort to create the image is usually intense. It’s not photographically the best, but I do spend a lot of time every week creating some sort of composite image. This week the subject was “spoon” and I made a spoon vase and spoon flowers out of white plastic spoons to make a bouquet. This entry was composed of about 42 layers! I have to say I was disapppinted that it didn’t make the top 52 because the comments I got on it from all over the world were just so inspiring. If nothing else that what really makes it all worth while.

52Frames Triangular Composition Photo Trending
Every week I look forward to seeing how my photo will do on the 52Frames photo challenge website I belong to. This week the subject was “triangular composition” and a photo of a mirrored Federal Triangle was submitted. It seems that lately my photo shows up in the trending section on the second day after the album is released - and this week was no exception. It’s been going on since April when a fellow framer told me about it. Prior to that I never paid attention to the website front page. Now I check the page at least daily. There are usually about 2500-3000 images submitted each week, so it’s so nice to see mine out of all of those hundreds. Although it’s not supposed to be a contest it still feels good to be recognized. I spend a lot of time each week editing the photo - taking more care about that than actually taking the photo. I also appreciate the written feedback/comments from people from all over the world who say they would like to try a technique I used. My program is Procreate - the same one I use for painting digital art. I realized it’s also good for editing photos and it is all self taught. I’m learning something new every week. I’m sure AI does and will have an impact on this sort of work. As the rules stand now you are not allowed to use any AI generated content. I hope it stays that way!

52Frames Trending Abstract Photo
I’m so thrilled to say that my photo was trending again on the 52Frames website! Ever since someone mentioned that a photo of mine was trending a few weeks ago I have been checking the site ever since - and to my surprise - my photos have appeared every week since then. It’s impressive because there are over 2500 submissions each week from all over the world. This week’s subject was “abstract” and I was really happy with my entry. It looks so much different than any of the others. I do spend a lot of time editing because it’s fun to do and I use procreate to help me along. So it’s not “just” a photo taken with a bit of editing. It’s actually a composite project using many layers and thinking through all of the options. I use Procreate to paint all of my custom pet portrait commissions and discovered the program works well for editing photos too. It’s all self taught and I am learning new things - by mistake - every week. I don’t think any of my photos would ever become top three for the week. Occasionally they get selected as a top 52 and sometimes they are noted on the instagram feed. I see it as a fun project to work on every week and my husband is such a great critic and makes the process all the more meaningful. So I want to thank 52Frames for showcasing my little part of the world. I’m not sure how these images are selected. I’m just happy to see the streak continue!

52Frames Magnolia Photo Trending
Ever since a fellow 52Framer sent a message to say that my photo was trending on the 52Frames website a few weeks ago I have been checking the website every day since then. And I’m glad I have! Since she told me, my weekly photos have been highlighted sometime during the week. There are three photos on the website that are updated and rotated at least daily. So yesterday it was such a thrill to see my magnolia image highlighted. Our friend from the Midwest told me about 52Frames about three years ago. And it has become a big part of our lives. The weekly photo challenges “dictate” where we might go for our morning walk depending on the subject matter. Last week the subject was “shoot with a phone.” Since I always shoot with my phone it was actually harder to figure out what that would be because the subject is quite broad. So we went to Old Town Alexandria where I found a miniature magnolia. Using the magnolia as the backdrop the bubble technique was done. Taking a Pyrex container, filling it will water and oil and a few drops of dishwashing liquid the container was placed over the iPad with the photo showing from the photo stream. Then several images were taken with my phone as the bubbles moved across the flower. I’ve also learned a lot from this whole experience. It’s nice to have your image shown among the 2500 - 3000 submitted from around the world each week. I never knew about it and appreciate my fellow framer telling me. So when I see someone’s photo that I know trending I let them know too.

52Frames Detail Photo Trending
I belong to a weekly photo challenge called 52Frames. There are generally 2500 to 3000 entries. Although it is not a “contest,” there are ways for your photo to stand out from the rest. Obviously being selected as one of the top three is the best - and I don’t think that will ever happen since my camera is my phone and I am not a photographer - I just love to take photos. And I also love to create composite images using procreate. Another way is to have your photo highlighted on instagram. I know it’s happened at least two times - but I think maybe three - before I realized it was happening! Another way to be recognized is to have your photo selected in the top 52. I’ve been fortunate enough that it has happened five times in two and a half years. Then one week a fellow framer told me that my photo was “trending” on the 52Frames website. During the week there are three photos that are updated at certain intervals. I don’t know what the criteria is. But since she told me I have been looking at the website daily to see how it works, and also informing fellow framers when their photos are trending. And since she told me about this trending my photo(s) has been highlighted every week since! Perhaps they have been highlighted before that but I rarely looked at the website during the week. So this week my image was in the top three again for about a day. I contacted 52Frames to see what the criteria was, but nothing specific was given. All I care is that it is such fun to see when my photos are part of the rotation. I’d like to make it a habit!

Reflection Photo Trending on 52Frames
I have been participating in the 52Frames weekly photo challenge for the last three years. And with each year I think my photography has improved. I was never a photographer but someone who always loved to take pictures. So I have learned a lot about new techniques and general principles. My camera is my iPhone so there are some limitations. I really love creating composite images which sort of combines photos with digital art using the procreate app. But in spite of only using an iPhone I have had five of my images selected as the best 52 of the week. Additionally I’ve had two selected on the instagram website. Recently one of my fellow framers told me that my photo was trending on the 52Frames website. I didn’t know what that meant. Apparently the website highlights images submitted for that week - but the criteria for selection aren’t known - number of likes? Number of comments? Anyway, since she told me about that I keep the website open and check it every day to see if any of my photos are showing. Since she told me there have been three in three weeks! The latest was of the image submitted this week about reflections. It seems the photos turnover about once a day so the three trending photos are refreshed. It’s just another way to have something showcased and I am really thrilled whenever it happens - especially when there are typically 2500-3000 entries. Lately I have been notifying fellow framers when their photo is trending as tbey may not know that happens either. Anyway, it’s a fun hobby and I have met people from all over the world.
