Old Town Alexandria Christmas Doorways

About twice a month we drive down to Old Town Alexandria. We visited this place even before we moved to the DC area. We were drawn to it because of its history but also because of its charm. It is especially lovely at this time of the year. It’s also a great place for a morning walk. We usually park by the riverfront at the founders park, then walk along the Potomac River. When we turn into the historic streets there is always something to see. The cobblestone walkways are interesting, but not easy to walk on. But the homes that line some of these streets of a bygone era are simply beautiful - but by experience - not very practical. Any house that is more vertical than horizontal is not anything I would be remotely interested in these days. But to visit this place is always a treat. So many of the front doors are seasonally decorated with all sorts of materials. I think I like magnolia branches and natural elements the most. The street that goes all out for Halloween does the same for Christmas. How about a wreath made with oyster shells? It would be tough to live there and not show some spirit. Some of the shops also have interesting displays. Once of them had a mannequin wearing a skirt of Christmas tree greens. We are never disappointed in Old Town. One of these days we may return to one of our favorite restaurants for my husband’s French onion soup. We haven’t been there for almost three years. Perhaps 2023 will return to a more “normal” way of life. I am desperately looking forward to it.
