Capitol Hill Crape Myrtles

It’s the time of year for crape myrtles. They are like the cherry blossoms of summer. I was reminded of it when we took a walk the other day in our northern Virginia neighborhood. The extreme weather created carpets of spent blossoms all along the sidewalks. So we thought a ride to our old neighborhood on Capitol Hill was in order to see the trees against the lovely architectural backdrop of townhouses and rowhouses. We weren’t disappointed when we started the “tour” at our old building, then drove around all the familiar places. All the colors were represented - red, white, purple and pink. There are several myrtles planted along the house office buildings and the Library of Congress - where I worked for ten years. The city is still quiet and more and more people are wearing face coverings since it is required in the district. In some respects we do miss the area, but in many others we are glad we moved when we did. I think street parking was the worst if it, along with all the issues associated with living in an 1890’s building. It’s nice to drive in to town if the mood strikes since it’s only a few miles away. Unfortunately we can’t do the things we liked to do - like attend Library events and programs. I’m not sure when we will be doing it again. So we use this as an excuse to see how things are going. If we knew then what we know now I’m not sure if it would have affected our choice of neighborhood. All I know is we are glad we left the city.
