Baseball Americana at the Library of Congress

Since we moved to Virginia two months ago we really enjoy driving in to town for programs and visits that don’t always have specific times. We try to avoid rush hour at all costs - particularly when we do have specific appointments. Last week we went for a Kluge Center Middle East program at the Library of Congress, where I worked for ten years. I’m always checking to see what items of interest and presentations are on the docket. We arrived early with the intention of seeing some of the new exhibits. One of them is Baseball Americana. It’s been there since last year but this is the first time we actually went through it. I did like the Babe Ruth shoes and the catcher shin guards, but was not thoroughly impressed with the contents overall. My brother played baseball - a pitcher - and was drafted by the Orioles out of high school so I know a bit about the sport. The big names from the 1970’s are still very much in my head. Probably most of the fun stuff is at the baseball hall of fame, but this exhibit was more of an all around baseball theme not specific to the major league - including the lyrics of the famous song. All in all it was worth wandering through. After all, it’s just a few miles from where we live and is a great afternoon outing.
