Cherry Blossoms in DC

Last week we drove to the city for one last ride until who knows when. I’ve always loved seeing the cherry blossoms in spring. When we lived on Capitol Hill we simply walked everywhere in town to see the lovely blooms. Since we moved to northern Virginia last year, we have to plan for the best times to do anything to avoid rush hour and traffic. Well, things are a lot different these days. The streets were empty and the cherry blossoms were not quite in full bloom - but even at this stage the Tidal Basin was always so busy it took an hour to move one mile. We drove first to the national Mall where everything was shut down - not unlike other “shut downs” before. Pennsylvania and Independence avenues were empty. The trees don’t know what is going on, so they are doing their best to brighten the day. The metros have been closed near the Tidal Basin to stop crowds from gathering. When we drove around the Tidal Basin there were a few people about. It was a great opportunity to see an old familiar place. I think I prefer the crowds.
