Wyndham House Mini Watering Globes for House Plants

After getting a lovely two level white distressed wood console table for the dining room, we decked it out with a variety of house plants. We are home most of the time, but we needed to figure out what we would do about watering the plants if and when we go away. So I did a bit of research and found several articles and comments about water globes. It sounded like a 50/50 opinion poll based on a variety of factors - glass vs plastic, size of the bulb, soil type, pot size, etc. Based on that I decided to get three decorative glass mini globes from Wyndham House and five clear plastic globes from CoscosX. The plastic bulbs have not arrived yet. So rather than wait for a vacation, we decided to try out the glass globes on a couple of plants. After easily filling the globe with water, one of them was jammed in to the soil and for the other one I first made a burrow with a stick based on what I had read. I didn’t leave much of a stem showing - the bulbs are almost sitting at soil level. It depends how top heavy the bulb tilts when it’s filled with water. So far they seem to be doing fine. The one with the burrow is losing water faster, but neither one is emptying out immediately. One of the pots has rocks on the bottom without drainage and the other has a built in tray with drainage. I’m sure all of these variables affect how the water gets absorbed. It will be interesting to see if plastic makes any difference compared to glass. I’m never sure when to water the plants so these items may become permanent fixtures if all goes well. Hopefully in the end we will feel comfortable leaving the plants behind. I suppose the greenery can always be replaced, but I don’t want to if we get this right.
