Alexandria Walk in the Shade

We hadn’t been to Old Town Alexandria for quite some time. So Friday we decided to drive in from northern Virginia and see what was up. I thought the roads would be packed going towards the airport and also because Alexandria is a vacation destination. I was wrong on both counts and very surprised. We found a parking spot in our usual place by the park on the waterfront. Since it was already quite hot and humid we knew we would be trying to find shade wherever we could. After passing by the passengers boarding on one of the many river boats we strolled along the waterfront. It a was actually quite empty. On the way back to the car we walked through the usual streets but this time we zig zagged to stay under the shaded side of the sidewalks. We used to do that when we lived on Capitol Hill. Anything to avoid the intense heat of the urban jungle was worth it. It actually ended up being quite pleasant. One of the beautiful old homes had lovely repetitive flower box arrangements all around the first floor windows. We even saw the remnants of the wisteria vine that had lasted so much longer because of the shade. Even by the time we left the town still felt empty. Maybe more people left for the weekend than came in. Regardless of the seasons it’s always a nice place to visit.
